I-70 Mountain Corridor: Eisenhower Tunnel, Loveland Pass and Vail Pass

Whether the drive from Denver to Vail takes two hours or five depends mostly on the mountain crossings along I-70. The Eisenhower Tunnel runs under the Continental Divide at 11158 feet, and Loveland Pass climbs to 11990 feet on US-6 three miles south of the portals. Roughly 20 miles further west, Vail Pass tops out at 10662 feet.

Here is the part nobody puts on a status page: the three are wired together. Close the tunnel and traffic dumps onto Loveland. Close Loveland and fuel trucks come back through the Eisenhower Tunnel in escorted convoys that stop everybody else. Each object gets its own section below, with its specs and what happens when it closes.

That top row is worth a second look. The Eisenhower Tunnel west portal is the highest point on the entire US Interstate Highway System, and the two bores sit at an average elevation of 11,112 feet according to CDOT. Altitude does real work here. A naturally aspirated engine loses roughly three percent of its power per 1,000 feet, so at the tunnel your 300-horsepower rental is quietly delivering around 200. Cruise control gives up on the climbs, and brakes fade on the long descents. The snow load matches the numbers: CDOT logs an average of 315 inches at the tunnel from November through April. The whole I-70 Mountain Corridor is built around those three crossings, and every closure story starts with one of them.

Eisenhower Johnson Tunnel

The Eisenhower Johnson Tunnel is one structure with two names and, confusingly, two separate holes. Locals call the whole thing the Eisenhower Tunnel and move on with their lives. Officially it is the Eisenhower-Edwin C. Johnson Memorial Tunnel, named for a president and for a Colorado governor and senator who spent decades arguing for an interstate across the state.

Specifications

The Eisenhower Tunnel is a dual bore highway tunnel carrying I-70 under the Continental Divide about 60 miles west of Denver. The published numbers, all from CDOT:

• Eisenhower tunnel elevation: 11,158 ft maximum.

• Average elevation: 11,112 ft.

• East portal elevation: 11,013 ft.

• Westbound Eisenhower bore: 1.693 miles.

• Eastbound Johnson bore: 1.697 miles.

• Grade inside: 1.64% rising westward.

• Approach grades: 7% west, 6% east.

• Cross passageways every 2,000 feet.

• Eisenhower bore opened March 1973.

• Johnson bore opened December 1979.

The clearance number confuses truckers every winter. Excavated height is 48 feet and the ceiling above the roadway sits at 16 feet 4 inches. Variable message boards hang below that, though, so the enforceable figure is 13 feet 11 inches. Trip the sensor at the portal and the signals go red, shutting the bore until somebody sorts you out.

Traffic is heavier than most people assume. CDOT counted 12,573,547 vehicles through the tunnel in 2025, an average of about 35,000 a day. July 2025 averaged 40,092 daily. Over fifty years and more than 434 million vehicles, the tunnel has never recorded a traffic fatality, which is a remarkable statistic for 1.7 miles of two-lane road with no shoulders. More than 30 full-time staff run it around the clock, all of them trained firefighters, with a dedicated fire truck and tow truck parked on site.

Why the Tunnel Closes

Closures are short and unglamorous. The usual cause is a single vehicle that spins out or crashes inside a bore, and with no shoulders or pull-outs in there, everything stops until the crew clears it. Typical duration runs 20 to 60 minutes. Other triggers include fires and over-height vehicles tripping the sensor, along with avalanche control on the approaches or heavy snow on the Straight Creek climb. When weather is the cause, the trouble starts on the approaches, because the bores themselves have a mountain overhead. The tunnel simply goes down with the roads leading into it.

Statewide the numbers are blunt. CDOT recorded 99 full closures of I-70 in 2024 totalling 161 hours, with an estimated $300 million hit to mountain economies. The agency has previously put the cost of a closed interstate at roughly $2 million per hour. CDOT publishes no official Eisenhower Tunnel closure counter, so treat any precise annual figure you read elsewhere as an estimate. The pattern itself is familiar: when the tunnel goes down, westbound traffic backs toward Silverthorne and eastbound toward Georgetown within minutes.

Metering: Why You Stop Before the Tunnel

Metering is deliberate flow control. When volume runs past what the corridor can swallow, CDOT holds vehicles outside the portals so traffic never backs up inside the bore, where an ambulance would have nowhere to go. Real thresholds from a February 2025 CDOT advisory: about 2,900 vehicles per hour moved through during five straight hours of metering one Presidents’ Day Saturday, and CDOT forecast 3,000 per hour for the Sunday that followed.

Stops average 15 to 20 minutes. The tail is the expensive part, because for every minute traffic is held it can take up to eight minutes for the back of the queue to move again. That ratio explains why a twenty-minute hold turns into an hour of your life. The metering page adds a detail worth knowing: CDOT engineers measured the actual added delay at about three and a half minutes, since released cars catch the slow traffic ahead anyway. The agency has also tested continuous flow metering, spreading eastbound traffic into four signal-controlled lanes on the west approach and cycling them every four to eight seconds so traffic keeps creeping forward. CDOT also says plainly that metering is neither an air quality measure nor a congestion relief programme.

Hazmat and the Hourly Convoy

Placarded hazardous loads are banned from the Eisenhower Tunnel year-round. The ban is enforced by geography. No hazmat is allowed on I-70 between Exit 205 at Silverthorne and Exit 216 at the east end of Loveland Pass. Those trucks take US-6 over the pass instead, which is why you meet tankers on switchbacks at 11,990 feet. The reasoning is simple: a fuel fire inside an enclosed bore at 11,158 feet, with two lanes and no shoulders, is not a survivable scenario.

When Loveland closes, the trucks have nowhere else to go. CDOT then escorts them through the tunnel at the top of each hour and holds everyone else while they pass, roughly 15 minutes per convoy. During the June 2025 Loveland Pass landslide the agency ran that protocol for days, spelling out the arrangement in its closure notices. So that is the answer to the classic mystery of sitting still on a clear, dry afternoon with no crash in sight and nothing on the message boards. Somewhere ahead, a line of tankers is being walked through the mountain.

Loveland Pass (US-6)

Loveland Pass is the corridor’s release valve, and a fragile one.

Specifications and Route

Loveland Pass carries US-6 over the Continental Divide at 11,990 feet, about three miles south of the Eisenhower Tunnel. Key facts:

• Summit elevation: 11,990 ft.

• Two-lane switchbacks with no lighting.

• Long sections without guardrail.

• Entirely above treeline.

• Average grade near 6.7%.

• Links Loveland Ski Area and Arapahoe Basin.

• Connects down to Dillon and Keystone.

• Trailers and oversize vehicles restricted.

The pass is maintained year-round, unlike Independence Pass, which shuts for the season. Short closures are still common. CDOT treats the 11-mile stretch between Loveland Ski Area and Keystone as a safety priority and runs an active avalanche control programme above the road, including the Professor and Widow paths directly across from Arapahoe Basin and the notorious Seven Sisters. In January 2026 the Transportation Commission authorised $2 million to replace ageing Gazex exploders after three of ten steel tubes failed structurally. Worth remembering when the pass shuts on a bluebird morning: that closure is deliberate and is preventing something worse.

When Loveland Pass Is the Detour

Here is the mechanism. When the Eisenhower Tunnel closes, several thousand vehicles per hour get pushed onto a two-lane mountain road built for a fraction of that. Volume alone can effectively close Loveland Pass even when the surface is dry. Add snow and the arithmetic gets worse, because the pass sits above treeline, so drifts rebuild across the lanes minutes after a plow goes through.

The honest version: a passenger car with all-wheel drive and real winter tires handles it in daylight. A loaded Sprinter in an active snowstorm, or a rental sedan on worn all-seasons, will find the one switchback where it stops climbing, and then nobody behind it goes anywhere either. Cell coverage is patchy, and the switchbacks get unforgiving after dark. Heavy vehicles crawl the grade at 10 to 20 mph, so skiers heading to A-Basin should budget the pass as the slow part of the trip. When Both Are Closed

Straight answer: you cannot cross the Divide at this location, and no clever app will find you a shortcut. The remaining options run long: south via US-285 and CO-9 through Fairplay, or north via US-40 over Berthoud Pass. There is also CO-91 from Copper down to Leadville with US-24 north into Minturn. Each adds 50 to 100 miles and one to three hours, and each carries its own closure risk in the same storm that shut the first two. Sitting still in Georgetown or Silverthorne with a coffee is frequently faster than any of them, and definitely safer. Vail Pass

Specifications

Vail Pass carries I-70 over the Gore Range between Copper Mountain and Vail, about 20 miles west of the Eisenhower Tunnel. Vail Pass elevation is 10,662 feet, which makes it the lowest of the three crossings and, counterintuitively, the one most likely to ruin an afternoon. It is an exposed climb with 7% grades and sweeping curves, topped by a summit that collects wind-blown snow and whiteout visibility while the tunnel, five hundred feet higher, sits in calm air under its mountain.

Why Vail Pass Closes Separately

Vail Pass runs on its own logic and its own weather. Common triggers are heavy snow with low visibility and commercial trucks that skipped the chain station and jackknifed on the ice. Avalanche control adds scheduled closures, with the Tenmile Canyon paths on the Copper side and the Narrows around Mile Point 186 both feeding the road. Duration varies: an incident might clear in an hour, and a planned avalanche mitigation window typically eats three to five.

That descent is the trap, and a multi-vehicle pileup there can outlast any planned closure. Westbound drivers see the valley open up below the summit and let the speed build on a grade that is steeper and longer than it looks from the top. CDOT is finishing the West Vail Pass Auxiliary Lanes project between Mile Point 180 and 190 through the end of 2026, adding climbing lanes plus the first avalanche and rockfall retention system of its kind in Colorado. Until then, expect intermittent 20-minute weekday traffic holds. The agency has also installed a remote electronic closure system on the pass, which shaves 30 to 45 minutes off the old process of physically driving crews out to block the road.

Is Vail Pass Open Right Now

We are not going to pretend this page knows. Live status belongs to CDOT and changes by the minute, so check COtrip.org or the COtrip Planner app for cameras and current I-70 road conditions. The same applies to the Eisenhower Tunnel and to Loveland Pass. The corridor hub at codot.gov lists active construction across the I-70 Mountain Corridor. Phone works too: dial 511 from anywhere in Colorado. Anyone showing you a green “open” badge without a live feed is guessing.

Reading Colorado Road Conditions

Half the panic about I-70 road conditions comes from not knowing what the words mean. CDOT uses a fixed vocabulary, and once it clicks, the message boards stop being cryptic.

Two things people get wrong. First, the Traction Law on this corridor runs on the calendar: from September 1 to May 31 on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison, every year, snow or no snow. Second, the rules changed recently. As of autumn 2025 CDOT’s updated Traction Law requires tires rated as winter, all-weather or mud and snow with at least 3/16-inch tread – and it applies to AWD and 4WD vehicles too. Four-wheel drive on worn all-seasons is no longer compliant, which catches out a lot of confident people in January. The fine is $100 plus a $33 surcharge, cheap next to the tow bill and very cheap next to the citation for blocking the highway. Full breakdown in our post on Colorado traction law in detail.

The Corridor Mile by Mile

Denver to Vail is about 104 miles and roughly two hours and fifteen minutes with nothing in the way. Here is what those miles actually contain, east to west.

Denver International Airport

The eastern anchor and the reason plenty of corridor trips start badly. DIA sits northeast of the city, so the run to westbound I-70 crosses the metro before the mountains even begin. Budget 45 to 60 minutes from the terminal to the foothills on a weekday afternoon. Nothing about this stretch is difficult, which is exactly why people leave late and pay for it later.

Floyd Hill

Mile Points 244 to 248, and a construction zone until late 2029. Expect narrowed, slower lanes and 20-minute holds for rock blasting through the end of 2026. Floyd Hill also hosts a genuinely strange event: sun glare safety closures on eastbound I-70 from sunrise to about 8:30 a.m., early November through February, with delays up to an hour. Idaho Springs

Around Exit 240, the first real mountain town on the route and the last easy fuel stop before the climbing gets serious. Elevation 7,526 feet. Westbound express lanes run from here to Empire on weekends and holidays as a toll-only option, with no free ride for carpools. If you are stuck in Idaho Springs eastbound, the problem is usually 25 miles ahead at the tunnel.

Georgetown Hill

From Georgetown at Exit 228 up past Silver Plume, the highway climbs hard and keeps climbing. Georgetown Hill is where underpowered vehicles and unchained trucks start losing traction in a storm, and one stuck semi on this grade closes the interstate for everyone behind it. The town itself is the best place on the eastern side to wait out a closure over coffee.

Eisenhower Tunnel

Mile Point 213, the summit of the whole system. The Eisenhower Tunnel approach from the east climbs at 6% for miles, and westbound traffic often queues here during metering. Headlights on, radio down, speed at the posted limit, no lane changes. There is no cell service inside, which surprises people mid-navigation. Loveland Pass leaves I-70 at Exit 216 on the east side of the tunnel and rejoins at Exit 205 in Silverthorne.

Straight Creek Descent

The western side drops at 7% toward Silverthorne along Straight Creek on three lanes each direction. Two runaway truck ramps and a 30 mph truck speed limit show how seriously CDOT takes this grade, and it is the stretch that eats brakes. Downshift early and stay out of the right lane if a truck is gaining speed. CDOT has culvert repair work along here into autumn 2026, with weekday single-lane closures.

Silverthorne and Dillon

Exit 205 is the corridor’s most useful bailout. Gas and food are right off the ramp, and the CO-9 route north and US-6 east over Loveland Pass both start here. Dillon sits just south around the reservoir. If the Eisenhower Tunnel closes westbound while you are in Silverthorne, this is where you stop and reassess before committing to the pass in bad light.

Frisco

Exits 201 and 203 sit three miles further west, at the junction for CO-9 south to Breckenridge. Frisco has the largest concentration of services between Denver and Vail and a Main Street worth the detour if you are waiting out a closure anyway. It is also the practical decision point for anyone skiing Breckenridge or Copper.

Copper Mountain to Vail Pass

Exit 195 puts you at Copper and at the CO-91 turnoff to Leadville, one of the few genuine Divide alternates. From there I-70 climbs five miles to the Vail Pass summit at Mile Point 190, where a rest area marks the top. The 14-mile descent into East Vail at Exit 180 is the accident-prone half of the pass.

Vail

Exit 176 for Vail Village and Lionshead, Exit 173 for West Vail. Elevation 8,150 feet. If everything went well, the drive took a bit over two hours from downtown Denver and none of the above mattered.

Those are dry-road, no-traffic numbers, so treat them as the absolute floor.

When to Drive the Corridor

The pattern is boringly consistent, which is good news for planning. Westbound out of Denver peaks Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. CDOT’s own guidance names Friday 2 to 7 p.m. and Sunday evening 3 to 6 p.m. as the windows to skip, with eastbound volume building as early as 11:30 a.m. Eastbound metering at the Eisenhower Tunnel happens mostly on Sunday afternoons. The agency also flags January through March for ski traffic and July through August for summer volume.

Clean windows, in rough order of reliability:

• Weekday mornings, any season.

• Westbound before 6 a.m.

• Westbound after 7 p.m.

• Eastbound before 11 a.m.

• Eastbound after 7 p.m.

Holiday Mondays behave like Sundays with worse numbers. On one Presidents’ Day weekend CDOT ran five consecutive hours of metering at the tunnel, finishing at 10 p.m. Leaving an hour earlier is almost always cheaper than the alternative, and staying an extra night in the mountains is cheaper still.
