The first pressure point is Floyd Hill, a steep curved grade about 30 miles from Denver where three lanes narrow and traffic stacks up. CDOT has been rebuilding this section, and lane closures are routine through the construction period.

The second is the Eisenhower–Johnson Memorial Tunnel, which carries I-70 under the Continental Divide at 11,158 feet. It is the highest point on the Interstate system and the longest mountain tunnel in the country. Around 37,000 vehicles pass through daily. The tunnel shuts for snow removal, crashes, and scheduled avalanche mitigation on the approaches, and when it does, there is no quick way around it.

Past the tunnel the road drops into Summit County and skirts Dillon Reservoir. The transfer leaves I-70 at Exit 203 in Frisco, then runs 9 miles south on Highway 9 along the Blue River into Breckenridge. That final stretch is two lanes and slows in heavy snow.

From September 1 through May 31, the Colorado Traction Law is in effect on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison. The entire Denver–Breckenridge route sits inside that stretch.

Under the law, your vehicle needs one of the following:

• Winter tires, all-weather rated tires, or mud and snow (M+S) tires with at least 3/16-inch tread depth
• Chains or an approved alternative traction device

The law is enforced on tire condition, not just drivetrain. A vehicle with all-wheel drive and worn summer tires does not comply. Noncompliance carries a fine, and the penalty is substantially higher if the vehicle blocks the roadway during a closure.

The return leg carries more risk than the arrival, because a delay costs you a flight rather than an hour.

Sundays and the last day of holiday weeks. Add an hour. Eastbound I-70 backs up from Silverthorne to the tunnel through the afternoon as the whole county heads to Denver at once, and the queue routinely adds 60 to 90 minutes.

Storm days. If the tunnel closes eastbound, the detour over Hoosier Pass adds nearly an hour to an already longer route. When forecasts look bad we recommend moving the pickup earlier rather than gambling on the corridor clearing.
