Distance, Drive Time and Route

The summit of Vail Pass sits at 10,662 feet. Conditions up there change faster than most forecasts can keep pace with, and a storm can stretch the trip well past the usual time. Your driver checks the pass reports before pickup and sets the pace to match the road surface.
Winter Rules on I-70
The whole route sits inside the Dotsero to Morrison section of I-70. Here the Colorado Traction Law applies every year from September 1 through May 31. A compliant vehicle needs 4WD or AWD with M+S tires or winter tires marked with the mountain-snowflake symbol. Tread depth must reach at least 3/16 inch. Chains are the other legal option.

River Run Village is the busiest base, built around the River Run Gondola. Kindred Resort stands right beside the gondola. Black Bear Lodge is a short walk from the lifts, and River Run Townhomes sit nearby on Erickson Loop.
Lakeside Village wraps around Keystone Lake and is home to Keystone Lodge & Spa. Mountain House is the original base area of the resort. Hidden River Lodge sits close to it, while Gateway Mountain Lodge is positioned between Mountain House and River Run.
3 Peaks Lodge and Hyatt Place Keystone face US-6 directly, which makes them some of the quickest stops on the route. Ski Tip Lodge sits farther out on Montezuma Road beyond River Run.
