Do You Need a Car in Vail?

Vail settles this before you land. Discover Vail states plainly that car-free travel is recommended, and Vail Village proves it: cars are not allowed inside at all. Do You Need a Car in Breckenridge?

Breck Free Ride runs free across town roughly 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., buses every 15 to 30 minutes; the My Free Ride app tracks them live. Also free:

Summit Stage covers the whole county too, reaching Frisco, Silverthorne, Keystone and Copper Mountain, no rental car involved. Do You Need a Car in Aspen and Snowmass?

Aspen does not hedge either. Aspen.gov opens its transportation page with you do not need a car to get around. RFTA, the Roaring Fork Transportation Authority, anchors the valley’s public transit with free routes linking Aspen, the airport, Snowmass Village, Woody Creek and the Intercept Lot, a 70-mile service area reaching Rifle. Winter brings free skier shuttles to all four mountains; summer makes RFTA the only sane way into Maroon Bells during peak hours:

Downtowner is a free, on-demand electric ride, booked by app, door-to-door. The Flyer, launched June 28, 2026 under Colorado’s SB 230 program, runs Brush Creek Park and Ride to Castle Creek and Maroon Creek Roads. Rubey Park Transit Center on Durant Street is the main hub; Brush Creek Park and Ride, 5 miles out, offers free parking and access to all four mountains.

When a Rental Car Actually Makes Sense

None of this makes a rental car pointless, just the wrong default. A car earns its keep for:
