Ways to Get from Denver to Beaver Creek

• Train and bus. Three separate legs. The RTD A Line covers the airport to Denver Union Station in 37 minutes for $10. The Bustang West Line runs Union Station to Avon Station for $19. The Route from Denver Airport to Beaver Creek

The drive follows Interstate 70 the whole way west. Six landmarks mark the progress.

Idaho Springs, mile 38. The last town with full services before the climb begins. Elevation here is 7,526 feet.

Georgetown, mile 47. The road starts the six-mile Georgetown Hill, one of the steepest sustained grades on the interstate system.

Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel, mile 60. At 11,158 feet, this is the highest point on the Interstate Highway System and the highest vehicular tunnel in the world. Westbound traffic uses the Johnson bore.

Silverthorne and Frisco, miles 65-70. The road drops into Summit County and past Dillon Reservoir.

Vail Pass, mile 82. The second climb, topping out at 10,662 feet. This section closes more often than any other in winter.

Exit 167, mile 121. The Avon and Beaver Creek exit. From the ramp the route runs south on Avon Road across the Eagle River and up Village Road to the resort entrance.

One thing worth knowing about the tunnel: when traffic reaches roughly 2,800 to 3,100 vehicles per hour, CDOT holds westbound cars at the east portal to keep the bore from filling. A hold lasts 15 to 20 minutes, and it takes about eight times that long for the queue to clear afterward. It is the single most common reason a Denver-Beaver Creek transfer runs late, and it is visible in CDOT data before it happens.

Colorado Traction Law and Winter Driving

The Colorado Traction Law applies on I-70 between Dotsero and Morrison from September 1 through May 31. Beaver Creek sits inside that stretch, at mile 121.

When the law is active, every passenger vehicle on that section must meet one of these conditions:

• four-wheel or all-wheel drive with mud-and-snow, winter, or all-weather rated tires, tread depth at least 3/16 inch
• two-wheel drive with tires meeting the same rating and tread depth
• chains or an approved alternative traction device such as textile socks

A violation costs $100 plus a $33 surcharge. If a non-compliant vehicle blocks the highway, the fine rises to $500 plus a $157 surcharge. In heavy weather CDOT escalates to the Passenger Vehicle Chain Law, and then chains or snow tires are mandatory regardless of drivetrain.

Rental agreements do not guarantee compliance. A two-wheel-drive rental on all-season tires below 3/16 inch of tread does not meet the requirement and carries the $100 fine, or $500 if the vehicle blocks the highway.

Flying into Denver or Eagle County Airport

Two airports serve Beaver Creek, and the right one depends on the trip.

Denver International (DEN) is 128 miles out, about 2 hours 20 minutes by road. It has year-round service, the widest schedule, and usually the cheaper ticket. A transfer starts at $575 for up to five passengers.

Eagle County Regional (EGE) is about 28 miles from the resort, roughly 40 minutes. Direct winter service runs from a limited set of cities and thins out in spring. A transfer starts at $300.

Fly into EGE when the trip is short, when you land late, or when you are travelling with small children and want the drive over quickly. Fly into DEN when you need schedule flexibility, when you are coming in summer, or when the fare difference is large enough to outweigh four extra hours of road time across the round trip.

If an EGE flight is cancelled, the common fallback is to rebook into Denver and drive. Tell dispatch and we move the transfer to the new airport.

Every vehicle entering Beaver Creek passes through the welcome gate on Village Road, reached from I-70 Exit 167. Bachelor Gulch lies higher on the mountain, around the Ritz-Carlton, with its own gated entrance off Bachelor Gulch Road. Arrowhead sits at the western edge of the ski area and has its own base village and lift. Avon is the town at the valley floor, directly on I-70, where the Westin Riverfront and its gondola are.

Beaver Creek to Denver Airport: How Early to Leave

Half of all transfers are the return trip, and it is the one people underestimate.

Denver International recommends arriving two hours before a domestic departure and three hours before an international one. Add the 2 hour 20 minute drive and a weather buffer, and the pickup time works out like this:

Worked example: a 10:40 a.m. domestic flight in February means a 5:10 a.m. pickup.

Three things shift those numbers:

Sunday afternoons. Eastbound I-70 from Silverthorne to the tunnel backs up between roughly noon and 7 p.m. as the whole corridor drives home. Add 45 minutes.

Snow. A storm on Vail Pass or at the tunnel can add an hour, and a full closure more. Dispatch watches CDOT overnight and calls if the pickup needs to move earlier.

Early flights. Anything departing before 8 a.m. means leaving in the middle of the night. For those, a night near the airport is often the better trade.

Give the flight number at booking and the pickup time is set against it.
